Treatment for AMD & Cataracts

Nov 18, 2021

Is Surgery An Option If You Have Both?

The central vision loss of age related macular degeneration (AMD) combined with the blurriness caused by cataracts creates a potent recipe for vision impairment. But there is hope for patients suffering from both ailments.

Your first step should be to schedule an appointment with your ophthalmologist. Before surgery can be recommended, your doctor will need to assess the levels of damage caused by the AMD and cataract individually. The results for your visit will determine if surgery is a viable option. Each patient is different, and treatment will ultimately depend on progression. An AMD sufferer with excessive damage to their retina for example, may not benefit from cataract surgery at all. Remember there are also alternatives to surgery which may be an option, such as low vision assistance, or an updated prescription for glasses.

Eye health can be complex, which is why it’s so important to schedule regular eye exams. Many vision problems can develop with few to no symptoms, meaning these exams are the best way to catch them early to prevent long term and irreversible damage. Since vision naturally declines as we age, it’s especially important for our aging friends and family members to get these checkups even more regularly. Be sure to ask your loved ones if they’re getting the proper care and treatment they deserve.
