Prevention Tips for Infection and Injury

One of our favorite holidays is right around the corner. But did you know Halloween costumes can have an actual scary side? Check out these tips to keep your vision safe while having fun!

Costume Contacts

It’s illegal to sell contacts without a prescription, yet we see them in costume shops this time of year. There’s a reason for the law - non-prescription contacts can cause infection, corneal ulcers, and even blindness! If you want to use contacts for your costume you can do so safely and easily. Just keep the following in mind:

  • Packaging that claims “one size fits all” or “no need to see an eye doctor” is false, do not buy!
  • Buy only FDA-approved products from eye care professionals that require a prescription.
  • No sharing! Sharing contacts can spread germs and bacteria, causing blinding corneal infections and even pink eye.
  • Practice good hygiene. Follow directions for cleaning, disinfecting and wearing costume contacts.
  • See an ophthalmologist right away if you notice any swelling, redness, pain or discharge from wearing contacts.
  • Limit wear of colored contact lenses to four or five hours. These less breathable lenses are less healthy for the eye.
  • Never sleep in contact lenses, even if you have a prescription.
  • Spread the word! Don’t let friends make the mistake of wearing costume contacts without a prescription. It can cost them their vision!

Eyelash Extensions

Unless you’re an experienced extension user, don’t take any chances. Be sure to:

  • Go to a professional. An aesthetician can make sure your extensions are applied safely and properly.
  • Use proper hygiene. Wash your hands, disinfect the extensions, and sterilize any tools you use around your eyes.
  • Test for glue allergies before applying.

Makeup

Costume makeup can be cheap and filled with potentially dangerous materials.

  • Sharing isn’t caring. Prevent the spread of germs and bacteria by keeping your makeup to yourself.
  • Avoid metallic, glitter, or flaky makeup that can cause infection or injury.
  • Remember to remove all makeup before bed
  • Don’t use makeup that’s older than three months

Following the pointers above should ensure your Halloween isn’t too scary for your vision. We hope you enjoy the holiday, and stay safe out there!
