Vaping has become commonplace, walking down the street it’s normal to pass at least one person vaping. Back in 2014, 12.6% of American adults say they had tried an e-cigarette at least once in their life, and the popularity of vaping has only increased since. Vaping and E-cigarettes are often marketed as a healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes, but are they? One study from 2015 went as far as to say that e-cigarettes are 95% less harmful than traditional smoking methods. A growing number of hospitalized young adults who vape are challenging the claim that it’s really safe. Health and government authorities are starting to voice concerns.

The discussion around vaping has been almost entirely focused on how the lungs are affected. Now some o phthalmologists are asking , what impact does vaping have on eye health?

Exposure to smoke of any sort can negatively affect the eyes. Vaping is still new enough we won’t know the long term effects for some time. However, one concern is nicotine levels in vapes aren’t regulated to the extent traditional cigarettes are. And nicotine is already known to cause side effects including pupil constriction and reduced visible retinal activity.

The addition of artificial flavors and chemical additives throw more variables into the mix, causing eye irritation and leading to lung toxicity. Excessive exposure has caused chronic dry eye disease (DED) and jeopardizes the immune system of the entire eye.

One recent study indicated the relationship between vaping, eye dryness, and poor tear quality. In other words: vaping may dry out the eyes, and weaken the body's ability to hydrate the eye with healthy tears.
