Can an Active Lifestyle Help Prevent Glaucoma?

Exercise and Glaucoma in Boise, ID.

Glaucoma is a common eye condition affecting around 3 million Americans. It’s caused by increased pressure in the eye that can result in vision loss or even blindness if left untreated. Currently there’s no cure for glaucoma, but there are treatment options to help minimize swelling. Early detection is key to preventing permanent damage. Once diagnosed your eye doctor will set up a treatment plan.

While several contributing factors to glaucoma can’t be helped, such as previous medical conditions and genetics, there are some things we can do to lower the risks. Recent findings indicate regular exercise can greatly diminish your chances of developing glaucoma. The increase of blood flow caused by exercise can improve eye pressure, preventing the formation of glaucoma.

One study looked at the correlation between exercise, particular jogging and walking, and glaucoma development. Researchers tracked the daily steps and speed of participants, then compared the data with those who developed glaucoma. They found people who frequently jog or walk briskly have diminished risk, with those who jogged faster have the lowest risk. Results also indicated increasing exercise time by just 10 minutes decreases glaucoma risks by 25%!
