Protecting Your Vision in Autumn

The leaves are changing and a beautiful world of color awaits! Fall brings us so many things to enjoy and experience, from crisp Autumn walks to hot drinks and cozy fires. This season we want to be sure you make the most of it while protecting your vision.

If you don’t have some already, consider buying some artificial tears eye drops. Fall comes with gusts of wind which can dry and irritate eyes. And as it starts getting chilly you’re likely to crank up the heater. The blissful heat coming from your car’s vents or the crackling fireplace can really dry out your eyes. Give them a break with a few drops!

Soon the leaves will start falling and you’ll probably end up in the yard with the rake or leaf blower. Put on your protective eyewear before you start. Plant matter will surely be flying, and it only takes a small piece to cause an eye infection known as fungal keratitis. If you’re wearing contact lenses, it’s a great idea to disinfect them after your yard work too.

Speaking of protective eyewear, if you or your children are participating in any seasonal sports, check out the best forms of eye protection. And don’t forget regular glasses can make injuries more severe if they shatter, so always opt for proper eyewear!

When it comes to Halloween, we always remind our patients about costume contacts. Decorative contact lenses are required by law to only be sold as a prescription. Contacts being sold without a prescription are not only illegal, they can cause permanent damage to your vision! That doesn’t mean you have to skip the coolest part of your costume - just schedule an eye exam and be fitted for them first.

Finally, one of the many enjoyable aspects of the season are harvest foods! There are several fruits and veggies bursting with antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin A , and other vitamins and minerals which all promote healthy vision. Apples, cauliflower, turnips, squash, pomegranates, and pears are all excellent sources of these healthy nutrients.

We wish you a safe and beautiful Autumn! Give us a call today or send us a message if you have any questions or want to learn more about our services. As always we’re here to help our friends and neighbors in the Treasure Valley achieve their vision goals!
