Your Loved Ones and Cataracts

Vision Changes in our Older Family Members

Did you know seniors with smaller family support networks are less likely to get  cataract surgery? A recent study showed our older loved one may not be aware of changes in their vision until a family member notices. This means it’s important our aging loved ones have health advocates in their life, such as their adult children or grandchildren.

As we age, our vision naturally begins to decline. One of the many common age-related vision problems, cataracts are a dense, cloudy area that forms in the lens of the eye. Symptoms may develop slowly, making them difficult to notice. But even those who do notice sometimes feel they should just “deal with” it rather than burden family members. At Vision Quest, we believe everyone deserves healthy vision, and offer solutions for cataracts and more.

Now it’s more important than ever to check in on our parents and grandparents. As the pandemic continues, older family members are even more isolated, potentially unaware changes in their vision have occurred.

We encourage everyone with aging loved ones to check in with them, even if it’s just a phone call! Next time you talk to your family member ask if they’ve noticed any changes in their vision, or experienced these symptoms:

  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Halos around lights
  • Double or ghosted vision (things might look like they overlap)
  • Colors seem dimmer or duller

If they have, it’s time to get an eye exam. Decreased vision makes completing simple tasks difficult, driving unsafe, and even hobbies like reading or watching television unenjoyable. Consider helping them make an appointment and taking them to it, so they can maintain the quality of life they deserve.
