AMD: Recognize the Risks

Apr 14, 2021

It Could Save Your Vision

For Americans over the age of 65, age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the number one cause of vision loss in the U.S. If caught early, AMD can be treated and even reversed in some cases. AMD is one of many eye conditions that make regular vision appointments increasingly important as we age. Left untreated, permanent vision loss will occur.

Risk Factors

Knowing the risk factors associated with AMD can save your sight. Two of the most important are family history and age. Find out if any relatives have had AMD, and let your ophthalmologist know. And if you’re over the age of 60 you should be scheduling regular eye exams to watch for early signs of AMD and other age related vision conditions.

While genetics and age aren’t something we can control, other risk factors can be managed. Smoking, high blood pressure, and obesity increase the risk of developing AMD. Addressing these risks can not only save your vision, but create lasting positive impacts on your overall health. A healthy diet of foods rich in vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids can contribute to improved eye health.

Symptoms

AMD comes in two forms, wet and dry. Wet AMD has more severe outcomes and develops more rapidly. If you’re experiencing the following symptoms, especially if they suddenly develop, schedule an eye exam right away:

  • Straight lines appearing bent or wavy
  • Decreasing central vision
  • Needing more light to read or see close-up
  • Difficulty adjusting to low light levels
  • Printed words appearing blurry
  • Dimming of colors
  • Difficulty recognizing faces
  • Developing a blurry or blind spot
