Cataract surgery isn’t a new operation. The first recorded cataract surgery took place in 1748.A large incision was made spanning halfway across the cornea of the eye, allowing the lens to be removed in one piece. As medicine advanced with both techniques and equipment ophthalmologists started using multiple blades to remove the cloudy lense and replace it with a new one. This was common practice for years until the introduction of laser surgery.

Today ophthalmologists use lasers for better stability and results. Conventional cataract surgeries were prone to surprises, due to instability of the surgeons hand, incisions made in the eye, or the type of lens used to replace the one that was removed. Laser surgery removes that uncertainty. There are no blades used in the procedure, and the lens type can be tested and replaced in minutes without having to schedule another surgery.
